In the past, there was this kind of add-on, I had used. When Firefox is changed its engine or something, a lot of good add-ons don’t work.
When I see interesting links in a page, I open them using ‘Open in the background tab’, then go to read all of them after that or I skip to read other tabs. The problem is at the end, I can not discriminate unvisited ones from others.
Finally, in 2025 I’ve found this one.
The test steps – Unvisited tabs indicator 1
On: Windows 11 Home
Install: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/unvisited-tabs-indicator/
1. Go to the link above, then install it.
There is a dialog box asking you, click ‘Add’.
2. I used the default settings without changing anything.
In the picture above, the icon of background tab was greyed out.
Note that I opened the same link.
From now on, left tab is the background tab, right tab is foreground tab.
You can see in the picture above, the color of icon of background tab depends on the color of icon of foreground tab.
3. I saw the color palette in the screenshot on add-on page.
How could I open it and change color of the icon?
Without intention, I knew how to do it.
In the picture above, click the icon at toolbar, then click a name of the add-on.
Picture above is the default settings.
I only changed brightness (see picture above)
The result is in the picture above, the icon is black with a white circle.
If you open a lot of tabs for something, you have to consider ability to separate unvisited tabs from others.
